(Story excerpt from Shawn Levy, The Oregonian) In a state in which smaller cities such as Ashland, Bend, Salem and Astoria have regular film events and notable festivals, it's long been a wonder to me that Oregon's major college towns -- Corvallis and Eugene -- haven't followed suit. Corvallis has its DaVinci Days, which has a small film festival component, but if there has ever been any bigger film activity in those cities, it's escaped notice this far north on I-5. Cinema Pacific looks likely to shatter that silence. In May, a group of graduate students, undergrads, faculty members and locals will present five days of movies, music, and talks with an emphasis on the film culture of the Pacific -- Asia, South and Central America, and the Western United States. There will be a survey of the works of the Korean director Bong Joon-Ho ("The Host," "Mother"), a sneak preview of "Cyrus" by the mumblecore wizards Jay and Mark Duplass, films from Mexico and from San Francisco experimentalist Jay Rosenblatt, and more.
