PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY
John Fenn currently holds a faculty position in the Arts and Administration Program at the University of Oregon's School of Architecture and the Allied Arts. With a Ph.D. in Folklore and Ethnomusicology from Indiana University (2004), John has conducted field research on popular music and youth identity (Malawi); folks arts & material culture (southern Indiana, the Pacific Northwest); and the cultural history of African American communities in Eugene/Springfield. He has also explored the intellectual history of public sector ethnomusicology, primarily via the commercial recordings released on Folkways by Laura Boulton. His teaching spans ethnomusicology theory and methods; popular music in the African diaspora; public folklore; and media studies.
