"Leisure Behaviors and Perceptions When Mid-Life Death is Imminent: A Case Report." co-authored by Dr. Gaylene Carpenter. And "Selling Mrs. Consumer" the life and work of Christine Frederick by Dr. Janice W. Rutherford.

Arts & Administration Associate Professor, Gaylene Carpenter, co-authored a paper with Susan Murray from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse that recently appeared in the Journal of Park and Recreation Administration. Called "Leisure Behaviors and Perceptions When Mid-Life Death is Imminent: A Case Report."
The researchers examined longitudinal data for Dottie (pseudonym) who died of cancer during the course of the study. Of particular interest were Dottie's leisure and life perceptions, and her behaviors prior to being diagnosed with cancer and in the two years subsequent to her death. The authors discuss the findings which supported the importance of leisure during times of wellness and ill health. For more information email Professor Carpenter.

Arts & Administration coordinator of the museum area of concentration, Dr. Janice W. Rutherford, has published a book through the University of Georgia Press on the life and work of Christine Frederick.
The work is the first book-length treatment of Frederick (1883-1970), home efficiency expert, advertising consultant, and consumer advocate. According to Dr. Rutherford, Frederick espoused the nineteenth-century ideal of preserving the virtuous home -- and a woman's place within it, but while promoting a division of labor by gender, she sought for herself the power and influence available only to men. Thus, she served the fall of the early-twentieth-century "first wave" of feminism. This account of Frederick's life reflects a dilemma that continues to affect women today--whether to seek professional gratification or to adhere to their traditional roles within the family. Selling Mrs. Consumer will be in book stores on February 1. For more information and ordering online click here.
