THE EFFIE LU AWARD

We are looking for a few good people...
and we bet you know plenty!

Each year, THE EFFIE Advisory Committee honors one of our own with THE EFFIE LU AWARD. The award is presented at THE EFFIE Workshop the first Friday in May.

The first recipient of THE EFFIE LU AWARD was Linda Phelps (Hilyard Community Center for Library, Cultural and Recreation Services, Eugene) in 1995; an Honorable Mention was presented to Mark Hanken, (Salem-Keizer Together). Other awardees have been Cheri Snell, (Dorris Ranch for Willamalane Park & Recreation District) in 1996; Lynda Myers (Cedar Hills for Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District) in 1997; Bonnie Beck (Westmoreland Community Center for Library, Cultural and Recreation Services, Eugene ) in 1998; Jeannine Mainville, (Howard Elementary School for 4J School District) 1999; Stephanie Row (Cedar Hills for Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District) in 2000; Doug Crispin (Southern Willamette Management Unit, Oregon Parks and recreation departent) in 2001; and Katie Nooshazar (Albany Parks and Recreation) in 2002; Jane Lancaster (Theatre Director for Portland Parks and Recreation) in 2003; Sue Thomas (Portland Parks and Recreation's Environmental Education Division), 2004, Janet Gieb Pretti (Southwestern Oregon Community College's Curry County), 2005, Sue Boettner, (Bend Metro Parks & Recreation), and 2007, Mike Marshall, (Sunset Empire Park & Recreation District).

In the true spirit of Dr. Effie Fairchild, this special award to an outstanding person who works in a Recreation, Community Education, or Event Management.

The recipient will be someone who:

  • Is an energetic and enthusiastic supporter of recreation, education or human services.
  • Is a networker; knows and works with a variety of people and agencies.
  • Instills confidence in other staff, students, and participants.
  • Is always in the pursuit of excellence and inspires this in others.
  • "Walks their talk." Their ethics and philosophies are evident in their behavior.
  • Has a playful attitude that permeates their life and the way they live it.
  • Exemplifies the "ripple effect," touching the lives of people who go on to touch more lives and so on.

Anyone can nominate an individual for THE EFFIE LU AWARD and this is how: Send a letter with your nominee's name, job title, and organization along with a brief explanation of why you are nominating this individual. All nominations are due April 1 of each calendar year. Nominators of AWARDEES are contacted in time to make certain they are present at the workshop in order to receive their recognition.
