Highlights of the study "Economic Impact of Not For Profit Art Industry in Illinois" Commissioned by the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation conducted by John Kaatz, Coopers & Lybrand L.L.P.

The arts industry supports one billion dollars in economic activity in Illinois annually. This figure includes the multiplier effect of the re-spending of initial, direct, arts-related expenditures, then cascading into the economy.

Arts organizations generate $699 million in total activity. Some 3.1 million out-of-state visitors attend arts activities, generating an output of $181 million.

The nine Chicago Museums in the Park had a combined attendance of 7.1 million, in 1994, generating total output of $354 million.

16,800 full and part-time jobs are associated with the arts industry, generating $5.8 million in annual state income tax revenue.

80% of direct arts-related spending occurs in the Chicago area.

57% of the 1,021 state grants allocated to arts organizations were in communities other than Chicago.

70% of the groups receiving state funds have budgets under $50,000.Of the museum visitors interviewed for the study who were from outside Illinois, .17% said the arts and cultural institutions and events had been the primary reason they came to Chicago. Another 37% in Chicago for non-arts reasons said the culture of the city had affected their decision to come.
